Meet the Geeks: What we’re looking forward to in the New Year

We’re about 2 weeks into the New Year and our New Year resolutions are still going strong. In addition to resolutions, we also have a whole lot of nerdy stuff to look forward to in the New Year. Here are some of the things we here can’t wait for.

There’s too much crazy bad going on in the world today, so sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that there are good things to look forward to in the upcoming year. No, these won’t solve the problems of the world, or bring us a better president, but they’ll give you a nice little distraction if only for an hour or two.

SCIENCE! I’m really looking forward to 2017 for a bunch of nerdy science reasons, like Google rewarding privately-funded teams who not only reach the surface of the moon but also have a rover go 500 meters on the moon. How cool is that. Other science based craziness coming at us this year is a full head transplant, yeah, freaky and the ethics are mind boggling (one question raised is if you have a new body and get knocked up, does the family of the body’s previous owner have right to the child since they’re the ones who are actually blood relatives?!). Such an interesting time we live in!!

MOVIES! Yeah there’s been no shortage of movies coming out lately and this year is following right along. I couldn’t pick just one, so I picked three that I’m looking forward to (like in a squee like a teenage girl look forward to). Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and of course Star Wars ep.8. There are a ton of really great looking movies making their way to the big screen and I’m super excited about it, but these three movies are ones that I will be seeing in the theater (in the nice, big, squishy seats that you get to reserve instead of fighting for a spot after waiting 5 hours in a line), and very probably seeing more than once.
TELEVISION! Yeah, sure there are things like the return of Walking Dead (sorry, it has me yawning through even the Negan story line) and American Horror Story (that’s coming back, right?). Those are fine and well but there are bigger, and more badass things to talk about, like this season’s Game of Thrones which is going to start up in June. Badassery is prevalent in and around Westeros and the women are coming for blood. I really hope to see more of that lovely Lady Mormont…I’m all about giving the dragons to her and watching as she just destroys it. We’re nearing our time’s end in HBO’s award winning show, and I don’t think it’s going to go down quietly. Another show I’m looking forward to this year is on Netflix and it’s a little piece called Stranger Things. That’s right, season 2 is supposed to be ready for our binge watching later this year.

The Lego Batman Movie: I didn’t expect to love the Lego Movie as much as I did. But like everyone else, I found myself singing “Everything is Awesome” constantly for 2 solid weeks. 2017 will see rise to the prequel: The Lego Batman Movie. If the trailers are any indication, this looks like it’ll live up to the original. Also, Will Arnett as Batman. ‘Nuff said.

Nintendo Switch/ Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild: Any year Nintendo releases a new console is automatically bound to be a good year. The Wii U didn’t do as well as Nintendo had hoped so naturally, all eyes are on the Nintendo Switch (formally codenamed NX). This home console-handheld hybrid has everyone intrigued and clamoring for a chance to test drive it before it launches in March. New console also means new games and the latest iteration in the Zelda franchise is already top of everyone’s Best of 2017 list (and it hasn’t even come out yet!). Open world Zelda? YES PLEASE!

Persona 5: The newest addition to Atlus’ Persona series has RPG gamers screaming. Yes, screaming. The game was initially announced during a Japanese livestream in November 2013 and has since been hit with delay after delay after delay. The Japanese version finally came out in the fall of 2016 while the West was hit with yet another delay from February 14 to April 4 (cue more screaming) I had a chance to play a demo at PSX last month and if that’s anything to go by, I will be playing Persona 5 for the rest of 2017.

“Beauty and the Beast”

From the time I saw how perfectly cast this live action remake was, I knew that I’d get to fall in love with some of my favorite characters all over again. I think it was marketing genius to evoke those old emotions from us with a shot for shot remake of the original trailer, and anybody who thinks this is a cut-and-paste remake beyond that is clearly unaware of the magic Disney has been creating with their live action tales over the last decade or so. I’m so ready to go back to that “Little town…”

“The Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2”

Talk about perfection…Marvel recognized the popularity of their anti-heroes, and Disney is ready to serve us up some comedic action brilliance, once again! I actually just rewatched the original last night, and the precious gems of perfection that are these characters cannot come back soon enough! Also, baby Groot…I mean, how can you not entirely LOVE that?!

“Star Wars: Episode VIII”

I mean, obviously! The return of Luke Skywalker, all Obi-Wan-esque…ummmm, yes! I mean, any excuse to return to the far,far away galaxy is pure perfection…and once again, the way Disney has treated this franchise is pure perfection. Also, R2, my favorite foul-mouthed droid has awakened! On a sad note, it will be our last visit with Princess Leia Organa, but I was happy to hear that her filming had been completed, and hope that they address Carrie Fisher’s passing with wisdom and sincerity…and not by trying to drag her out into future films.

(So, it is safe to say that my Disney runs deep…and I’m okay with that. All three movies are Disney, and I’m also looking forward to their announcement of plans for the Star Wars and Marvel parts of the parks. With two of the movies slated to have new attractions coming out, 2017 should be rather brilliant!)
